Synopsis
50 years ago, people used 35 mm cameras like we use smartphones in the age of Instagram. They photographed what they ate, their holidays, and family reunions. Imagining what prompted a stranger to press the shutter decades ago is the purpose behind Lee Shulman’s Anonymous Project, which curates 300 anonymous images from his collection of 700,000+ Kodachrome slides. The places, dates, and people may be unknown, but the stories in these snapshots are universally familiar.

About the Author
London–born Lee Shulman is a graduate of the University of Westminster. He is an award-winning film director working in advertising and music videos. In 2017, he founded The Anonymous Project, which has become one of the most important collections of amateur photography slides in the world. The work has been exhibited in Paris and Milan and will be presented this year at the prestigious Rencontres D’Arles Photography Festival in France.

Man machte Fotos von den Liebsten - im Urlaub, auf Partys oder Familienfesten; man hielt die Geburt des ersten Kindes fest, den Sprössling im Cowboy-Outfit, den Kauf eines neuen Farbfernsehers oder Nachmittage am Strand; man fotografierte auf Angeltouren und Hochzeiten oder dokumentierte das Händchenhalten, Küssen und Tanzen - stets werden dem Betrachter tiefe Einblicke ins Herz einer vergangenen Zeitgewährt. Der Band beginnt mit Szenen aus der frühen Kindheit und endet mit Bildern von Senioren, folgt damit auch im Aufbau einem der faszinierendsten Themen überhaupt: dem Vergehen der Zeit. Das Projekt begann mit einem arglosen Kauf auf eBay. Der Filmemacher Lee Shulman erwarb einen Satz Kodachrome-Kleinbilddias - anonyme Familienfotos - und war so angetan von dem, was er den »emotionalen Wert dieser Lebensschnipsel« nannte, dass ihm sofort klar war: Er brauchte mehr davon. Also rief er im Januar 2017 The Anonymous Project ins Leben. Seitdem erhielt er von Spendern und Händlern fast 700.000 Aufnahmen, vornehmlich aus der Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts, deren Negative und Diapositive er sammelte, konservierte und katalogisierte. The Anonymous Project, das hier erstmals veröffentlicht wird, zeigt eine kuratierte Auswahl von etwa 300 Bildern, die das Leben unzähliger anonymer Personen dokumentiert. Die Aufnahmen reichen von den Fünfzigern, als die Farbfotografie für jedermann erschwinglich wurde, bis in die siebziger Jahre und bestechen durch ihre Kodachrome-Farben.
