La creación de la ruta del Kisokaido fue una orden del entonces sogún de Japón, Tokugawa Ieyasu, que a principios del siglo XVII decretó la construcción de estaciones de descanso en el penoso tramo que iba desde Edo (actual Tokio) hasta Kyoto. Se abrieron posadas, tiendas y restaurantes que proporcionaban alimento y alojamiento a los agotados viajeros. En 1835, el famoso xilógrafo Keisai Eisen recibió el encargo de realizar una serie de estampas que representaran la ruta del Kisokaido. Después de hacerse cargo de 24 de estas estampas, Eisen fue sustituido por Utagawa Hiroshige, que completó la serie de 70 imágenes en 1838.Tanto Eisen como Hiroshige eran reconocidos maestros del grabado. Las sesenta y nueve estaciones del Kisokaido pone de manifiesto los distintos estilos de ambos y su habilidad común. Desde el ajetreado punto de partida de Nihonbashi hasta el castillo de Iwamurata, Eisen opta por una paleta más apagada, pero sobresale en la figuración, sobre todo en la representación de mujeres glamurosas, y se recrea en las imágenes de toda la actividad que se realiza a lo largo del camino, LIBRO.
