In India from time immemorial, there were community managed irrigation systems and some of them exist even today. The success (or) failure of an irrigation system depends on the active participation of an individual beneficiary in association with the community at large. In India, canal was a major source of irrigation. So, the maintenance of these canals is important and it could be done through the Water Users‟ Association (WUA). If the WUA were studied this would provide scope for improving the effective functioning of the association. Keeping in view, the present study has been designed to study the structure, functioning and to assess the effectiveness of WUA. This study also designed to find out the profile of WUA members, effectiveness of WUA, profile characteristics that led to effectiveness of WUA, the constraints faced by WUA members, the suggestions given by farmers to improve the effectiveness of association and revival of canal fed agriculture were also studied.
