Synopsis
Present-day academia often asserts the necessity for interdisciplinary research without asking what exactly is meant by 'interdisciplinarity' in the first place and what it can be precisely. Also, this call for cooperation is made irrespective of specific disciplines and groups of academic professionals. This leaves open the question as to what challenges or even problems come up for specific disciplines and departments. These papers offer answers to this question as well as clarifications of the notion of interdisciplinarity as a challenge for both the humanities and social sciences. The contributors grant insight into the diversity and complexity of this demand for interdisciplinarity from the perspectives of philosophy, law, literary studies, economics as well as historiography.

About the Author
Michael Quante ist Professor fur Praktische Philosophie an der Westfalischen Wilhelms-Universitat Munster. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind der Deutsche Idealismus, Philosophie der Person, Handlungstheorie, Sozialphilosophie sowie Ethik. Tim Rojek ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im SFB 1150 Kulturen des Entscheidens an der Westfalischen Wilhelms-Universitat Munster. Er arbeitet zum Deutschen Idealismus sowie zur Philosophie der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften. Prof. Dr. Carl Friedrich Gethmann ist ein deutscher Philosoph. Er lehrte an der Universitat Duisburg-Essen. Seine Schwerpunkte sind Sprachphilosophie, Argumentationstheorie, Logik, Phanomenologie sowie angewandte Philosophie (Medizinische Ethik, Umweltethik, Technikfolgenabschatzung). Priv.-Doz. Dr. Thomas Gutmann ist Wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Juristischen Seminar und Privatdozent an der Fakultat fur Philosophie, Wissenschaftstheorie und Religionswissenschaft der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen. Dr. Philip R. Hoffmann-Rehnitz ist Geschaftsfuhrer und wissenschaftlicher Koordinator des Sonderforschungsbereichs 1150 Kulturen des Entscheidens an der Westfalischen Wilhelms-Universitat Munster.
