Er studiert Jura in Wien und Berlin und schreibt zunächst Beiträge für den Kulturteil der Karlsbader Zeitung, später wird er zu einem Stammautor der Berliner Zeitschrift »Die Aktion«. 1914 übersiedelt er in die Schweiz, wo er die Literaturzeitschrift »Der Mistral« herausgibt und Kontakt zum Dadaismus findet. Sein Verhältnis zu den führenden Dadaisten bleibt zwiespältig und er stößt zum Teil auf offene Ablehnung. Nach seiner Abwendung von der dadaistischen Bewegung schreibt er Kriminalgeschichten, deren offensiv sexueller Ton für Aufsehen sorgt. 1933 setzen die Nationalsozialisten sein Werk auf den Index des unerwünschten Schrifttums.
