Synopsis

All forms of life rest on food (Annatbhavanti Bhutani: Bhagavatgita III: 14). Civilization began with quest for food and got firmly established with the Neolithic revolution with the invention of agriculture and animal husbandry. They were largely group activities, the smallest unit being a family, in which women were equal partners. With the march of civilization, human activities took specialized forms along gender lines and gender roles got culturally stereotyped. In the process women roles became subservient to those of men where in physically less strenuous, home oriented jobs were left to women. Cooking and feeding the members of the family became a female specialty, almost universally a mother’s job. In times of food scarcity, particularly in low income groups, distribution of the available food in the family gets disturbed, and the distributor, particularly when she is a mother, chooses to sacrifice her share in favour of her husband and children, often male children. Thus women in the family tend to eat less. Consequently, they tend to suffer from nutritional deficiency.
