Originally published in 1950, as part of the Cambridge Plain Texts series, this volume contains the full text of Die Soldaten by eighteenth-century German writer Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751–92). The play is presented in German, with a short editorial introduction and bibliography.
About the Author:
Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz wird am 12. Januar 1751 in Seßwegen/Livland als evangelischer Pfarrerssohn geboren. Er studiert Theologie in Königsberg, wo er vor allem die Vorlesungen Kants hört. Auf einer Reise nach Straßburg lernt er 1771 Goethe kennen, den er bewundert. In den folgenden Jahren kommt es zu mehreren Treffen. 1773 unterhält er einen Briefwechsel mit Herder . Nachdem seine ersten Dramen veröffentlicht worden sind folgt er im April Goethe nach Weimar. Aufgrund eines nicht überlieferten Vorfalls ("Lenzens Eseley"; Goethe) wird er im November aus der Stadt ausgewiesen. Goethe bricht jeden Kontakt mit ihm ab. Ende 1777 erleidet er in Zürich einem psychischem Anfall, von dem er sich nie vollends erholen wird. Dem Vater folgt er nach Riga, aber dort und auch in St. Petersburg findet er keine dauerhafte Anstellung. Schließlich geht er nach Moskau, wo er zeitweilig als Hauslehrer tätig ist. Dort stirbt er in der Nacht vom 3. zum 4. Juni 1792.
