Die Metamorphosen des römischen Dichters Ovid, geschrieben vermutlich ab dem Jahr 1 oder 3 n. Chr. bis um 8 n. Chr., sind ein in Hexametern verfasstes mythologisches Werk über Metamorphosen ("Verwandlungen"). Die Metamorphosen bestehen aus 15 Büchern von je etwa 700 - 900 Versen und beschreiben die Entstehung und Geschichte der Welt in den Begriffen der römischen und griechischen Mythologie. Dabei wurden etwa 250 Sagen verarbeitet. Seit seinem Erscheinen war es stets eines der populärsten mythologischen Werke überhaupt und sicherlich das den mittelalterlichen Schriftstellern und Poeten am besten bekannte. Somit hatte dieses Werk einen enormen Einfluss auf die Literatur des Mittelalters sowie auf die bildende Kunst vom Mittelalter bis zum Barock.

About the Author:
Ovid Publius Ovidius Naso (43 bcece 17 or 18) was born into a wealthy Roman family and became the most distinguished poet of his time. He died in exile on the Black Sea, far from Rome and his literary life. David Raeburn is a lecturer in classics at Oxford University. He has translated Sophocles and directed numerous school and university productions of Greek tragedies.
