Synopsis

The articles in this book deal with European discourses about migration, "foreigner policy", asylum policy, integration, multiculturalism, human rights and cultural as well as national identity. Against the background of the economic, political and social changes of the last decade in Europe, the papers discuss different forms of social discrimination. They examine from a semiotically multi-modal and multi-perspectival, critical-discourse-analytical, historical and sociological perpective how racist, antisemitic and "xenophobic" prejudices manifest themselves linguistically and visually in political pamphlets, speeches, debates, press articles, caricatures, photos and films. Further, they examine problems of imperialist language policy as well as the possibility of a successful political counter-action against the different forms of social discrimination.
