Seine bestens erhaltenen Pastelle eine Technik, die Zeichnen und Malen miteinander verbindet sind spontan entstandene Impressionen und gelten heute als kleine Meisterwerke. Der Künstler selber stufte sie lediglich als «Pastellnaturskizzen» ein, die er als Motivvorrat für seine Bildkompositionen wie einen Schatz hütete und nur seinen besten Freunden zeigte.
