Synopsis
Set in Vienna in the early part of the twentieth century, Zipper and his Father is a compelling and wonderfully atmospheric portrayal of a childhood friend, Arnold Zipper, and his father, as seen through the eyes of a young boy. The Zipper family welcome the arrival of their son's friend and the boy is fascinated by their cosy suburban life. Zipper Senior, a violin-maker and travelling salesman, is determined that they will attain the success that was denied to him. However, as the two friends mature their lives take different paths' - the army, university, early career choices and a disastrous marriage to an aspiring actress all take their toll - and each has a very different story to tell. From the outskirts of Vienna to the Hollywood hills, Zipper and his Father charts the ambitions of a whole generation who, during period of erratic social change, found themselves dreaming of what might have been.

About the Author
Joseph Roth (1894-1939) was the great elegist of the cosmopolitan culture that flourished in the dying days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He published several books and articles before his untimely death at the age of 44. Roth s writing has been admired by J. M. Coetzee, Jeffrey Eugenides, Elie Wiesel, and Nadine Gordimer, among many others.

September 1894 in Brody bei Lemberg als Sohn eines jüdischen Getreidehändlers geboren. Nach Schule und Matura studierte er Germanistik und Philosophie im damals österreichischen Lemberg und in Wien. 1916 meldete er sich als Einjährig-Freiwilliger zum Militärdienst. Während seines Kriegsdienstes in Galizien veröffentlichte er erste Gedichte und Feuilletons in Prager und Wiener Zeitungen. Ab 1918 arbeitete er als Journalist zuerst in Wien, später in Berlin.1922 heiratete er Friederike Reichler, die 1928 an Schizophrenie erkrankte und 1940 aufgrund der nazionalsozialistischen Euthanasiegesetze in einer Linzer Heilanstalt ermordet wurde. 1923-1932 war er Korrespondent der »Frankfurter Zeitung« und veröffentlichte zahlreiche Beiträge und Artikelserien auch in anderen Blättern. Als Romancier setzt sich Roth zunächst mit den traumatischen Erfahrungen ehemaliger Frontoffiziere auseinander (1927 »Flucht ohne Ende«); später dann erfolgreich u.a. mit der mythisierenden Beschreibung der Habsburgermonarchie vor ihrem Untergang. Anfang 1933 ging er nach Paris ins Exil und arbeitete dort an Exilzeitungen und -zeitschriften mit. Gezeichnet durch Schicksalsschläge, enttäuscht über die politischen Zustände und alkoholkrank starb Roth am 27. Mai 1939 in einem Pariser Armenhospital. Seller Inventory # 9783865118325
