Chr.) gibt und die im Mittelalter sehr in Blüte stand, erlebte in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine Renaissance. Es geht dabei darum, dass man durch die Analyse natürlicher Sprachen nicht nur formallogische Gesetze findet, sondern auch Probleme wie z. B. das des grammatischen Schließens, der direkten Abbildung, der Bedeutung der Kategoreme und der Synkategoreme (Termini und Partikeln),das Problem der Begriffe und ihrer Beziehung zu den Zeichen einerseits und den Gegenständen andererseits, erörtert. Es werden also nicht nur logische, begriffstheoretische und ontologische, sondern auch typisch grammatische Probleme behandelt. So wurden z. B. die Relationsschlüsse bis Peirce und De Morgan, also bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht im Rahmen der Logik, sondern im Rahmen der rationalen Grammatik behandelt. Eine Analyse der Synkategoremata oder Partikeln zeigt außerdem, dass die formalen Relationen in den historischen Sprachen reicher sind, als in gegenwärtigen formalen Systemen. Der Rationalgrammatiker ist, wie er im Mittelalter genannt wurde, ein grammaticus mixtus, d.h. er ist Logiker, Begriffstheoretiker und Ontologe zugleich.
