Synopsis

This illustrated monograph accompanies a retrospective exhibition of paintings by Judith Rothschild (1921-1993) first seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and subsequently shown at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. It gives a detailed and intimate account of both Rothschild's art and life, skillfully weaving together the relationships between the development of her painting and the circumstances in which it was created, including the contemporaries who influenced her work. Also explored is the artist's interest in color theory, including its relation to musical notation. Rothschild sought her imagery in the complex interaction between feelings, things, and ideas, and her late style was built on the unlikely combination of the sensual richness of Matisse's late cutouts and the geometric austerity of Mondrian. This led to the relief-painting technique that she employed for the last twenty years of her life, making it possible for her to create some of her most original and powerful works.
