Klar, dass sich Crockford an fortgeschrittene Javascript- oder zumindest anderweitige versierte Programmierer richtet, denn er hält sich nicht mit Einführungen für Anfänger auf, sondern erklärt, was an Javascript funktioniert und was nicht (und warum). Zuerst erklärt er mit Witz und Verve warum eigentlich Javascript und beschreibt das Versuchsgelände, auf dem er seine Expertise abfackeln wird. Dann geht es loszuerst ein Blick auf die Sprachgrammatik von Whitespace über Strings bis hin zu Funktionen. Als nächstes Objekte, Funktionen, Vererbung, Arrays und Reguläre Ausdrücke. Damit deckt er den Löwenanteil der Sprache und auch seines Buchs ab. Dann kommen noch kurz Methoden, Stil, schöne Features sowie im Anhang furchtbare und schlechte Seiten der Scriptsprache. Crockfords "so macht man das mit Javascript am Besten" und "so geht es gar nicht" ist genial, macht Spaß und ist auf 160 Seiten so komprimiert, dass man innerhalb kurzer Zeit kapiert, warum manche Sachen mit Javascript funktionieren und manche nicht. Am Ende von Das Beste an Javascript kann man Javascript selbstbewusst und gezielt programmieren, ohne sich über seine Unzulänglichkeiten aufregen zu müssen. Empfehlung, definitiv!
