Rene Giessen, who recorded the film music for ‘Traumschiff’, ‘Tatort’ and ‘Winnetou’ (starring Pierre Brice and Lex Barker) has written this beginner’s book entitled ‘Master of Harp’, in which he shares his passion for the harmonica with his students. In the first section, students will learn how to play a diatonic Richter harmonica. The author does not use notes here, but explains the different techniques to get the best out of each sound, for example playing with a pointed mouth, with tongue vamping and with covered holes. In the second section of the book the student will switch to a chromatic harmonica, which is used by professional musicians, to achieve a high sound quality. In this section, students will learn all about traditional notation and the theory of harmony. In two chapters the author introduces the 16-hole chromatic harmonica and the 12-hole chromatic harmonica, which extend the tonal range and playing options for the instrument. This comprehensive book written by a master of the harmonica enables the reader to play their instrument masterfully too.

No less a person than the legendary conductor Raphael Kubelik discovered a teenage musician at a Bavarian TV & Radio Network compeition who coaxed sounds out of his harmonica like he had never heard them before. Since then, the mystical sound of Rene Giessen's harmonica has fascinated worldwide audiences, orchestras, conductors and composers alike. He has performed for film soundtracks such as "Kommissar Maigret" ("Inspector Maigret"), "Traumschiff" ("The Ship of Dreams") and "Tatort" ("Scene of the Crime") as well his most well-known work in the "Winnetou" films with Pierre Brice and Lex Barker. For his recordings for "The Story of Monty Spinnerratz" (Augsburger Puppenkiste, Warner Bros.), he received the "Bavarian Children's Film Prize". From January to May 2000 he was on a world tour with the Berlin Philharmonic. The absolute highlight of the tour was their concert in the amphitheater at Ephesus (Turkey) in honor of "5000 Years of Ephesus". The concert was such a success that the Berlin orchestra spontaneously offered Rene Giessen a position as a permanent collaborator. The enonmous success of Giessen's at workshops with children, teenagers and adults, at conferences for further education for teachers and at seminars at national music education conventions not to mention his activities as chairman of "Jugend musiziert" (nationwide music competition for youths). In Middle Hessen, show that he is a committed music educator as well. His projects in elementary, vocational and high schools confirm the major importance of the harmonica for a student's first contact with music.
