Gr 3–5—Numbers are everywhere. They can be used to help people tell time, measure objects, determine the seasons, and recognize patterns in the natural world. This title presents the history of numbers in a brief, fascinating narrative. The text begins by explaining the importance of numbers and why they became necessary for everyday life, such as for trade. Topics covered include the development of basic counting, the creation of symbols to represent numbers, national standards of measurements, money, temperature, calendars, time, and binary code. Olejníková's illustrations complement the text nicely using eye-catching images as well as graphs, diagrams, time lines, and panels. The lack of back matter makes the title less valuable for teaching, but the content is still fascinating.
