Synopsis
?On Time? presents artefacts from the design collection of the Museum of Design Zrich with a themed focus on an explosive social topic: time as a luxury good and the tools that go with it. The variety in form and function of equipment which disciplines our time management is in itself surprising ? from the wrist watch to GPS, from timetables to mobile phones, from the Pill to family schedulers or from the digital cuckoo clock to palm handhelds. This will give new momentum to the fundamental debate between timeless and contemporary design which has been ignited with virulence in the tradition-minded ?timekeeping industry?, albeit rather late in the day. The book meshes image and text into a both illuminating and amusing reference work on the design history of time measurement. Unlike industry-specific (collector) literature , the emphasis here is on visual phenomenon experienced at the interface of creativity, invention, production and market.
