Synopsis
Much like his photographs, the video work of Swiss Artist Stephan Banz deals with the seemingly unspectacular reality of his family life and everyday environment. His tapes feature his two children, himself, or his rabid neighbor as protagonists. The children's room, the stairwell of his own apartment, a forest nearby, the lake-Banz discovers the strange and alien at the heart of his familiar world. At a time when documentary soaps and their trademark dissolution of the boundaries between the private and the public have become standard television fare, Banz is trying to look beyond titillating sensationalism and trivial psychological truisms in order to accomplish a constructive intermingling of the social and the individual. His video stills are glimpses of quotidian fairy tales-eerie, playful and humorous.

Er beschäftigt sich auch in seinen Videos - sein Werk umfasst mittlerweile an die 150 Bände - seit Jahren mit seinem vermeintlich unspektakulären Familienleben, mit den Geschehnissen in seiner nächsten Umgebung. Protagonisten seiner Tapes sind oft seine beiden Kinder, er selbst oder auch ein rabiater Nachbar. Schauplätze sind das Kinderzimmer oder das Treppenhaus der eigenen Wohnung, der eigene Garten, ein nahes Wäldchen, der vertraute See. Aber in der Optik der Videostill-Sequenzen wird das Eigene fremdartig und rückt das Fremde näher. Banz konstruiert nach eigener Aussage Bilder 'jener Augenblicke, in denen sich Zufall und Scharfsicht verbinden und das verborgene Mysterium der Wirklichkeit in seiner seltsamen Vieldeutigkeit sichtbar wird'. Hinter der Idylle des familiären Gartens, so könnte man diese Bilder mit ihrem höchst eigenen voyeuristisch-privatistischen Gestus lesen, lauert ein Abgrund, nimmt das Unfassbare seinen Lauf.
