In her second book, after The Japanese Tattoo, American photographer Fellman creates a visual feast in the form of 66 sepia-toned, large-scale images of closely photographed flowers. Petals, pistils, shadows, and opaque light are the elements Fellman employs to create her richly kinetic and lush compositions. The images invite the viewer to come closer, and revel in detail and abstraction, texture and tone, and ambiguity of meaning. Her skill is exposed in the range of tone, texture, and feeling she accesses through split-tone sepia photography. The images spill off the pages, allowing the viewer the fullest possible view. As the title suggests, the images open themselves with time; revealing hidden detail and meaning via the viewer's engaged attention. The book, which opens with a rhapsodic introduction by poet and nature writer Ackerman and ends with a highly interesting critical essay by Rutgers professor Flieger, is lovely.
