The net result of their various approaches is a unique portrait in black and whitemodern, complex, and unprecedented in style.
The fascinating city of Shanghai is interpreted here by three Swiss photographers, in different ways and with different techniques. Ferit Kuyas works with the unpretentious discipline of an architectural photographer. Edy Brunner's impressive panoramas reflect the immense size and diversity of this citya diversity which Marco Paoluzzo records from the reporter's viewpoint in his pictures of everyday Chinese life today and its various facets.

No major city in the world is changing more dramatically than Shanghai. This oversized book of black-and-white photographs by proficient Swiss photographers Kuyas, Edy Brunner, and Marco Paoluzzo provocatively captures these changes by juxtaposing the new and the old, the human and the material, the ordinary and the unusual. Particular attention is paid to the textures, shadows, and angles of new buildings rising up through the worn and weathered older landscape of the city. The text, which appears in both Chinese and English, is very brief and is more concerned with the art of photography than the subject of Shanghai. The high price puts this book out of reach for public libraries, but it is a worthy choice for academic libraries with larger art and photography collections.
