Das zweisprachige (deutsch/englisch) und farbig bebilderte Buch enthält sechs Beiträge von Film-und Kunstwissenschaftlern, Mitarbeitern und Künstlerfreunden von Müller, ein Vorwort von Stefanie Schulte Strathaus sowie ein umfangreiches Interview, das Scott McDonald mit dem Künstler geführt hat.Matthias Müller (\*1961), derzeit Professor für Experimentellen Film an der Kunsthochschule für Medien in Köln, kommt aus der Super-8-Bewegung und arbeitet mittlerweile auch im installativen Bereich. Maßgeblich war er an der Entwicklung des Found Footage-Genres beteiligt. Während sich Vertreter dieser Kunstform häufig auf ein vermeintlich kollektives Kinogedächtnis stützen, macht Müller durch seine Verwendung von Fremdmaterial jene beiläufigen Film-Momente sichtbar, die meist nur unbewußt wahrgenommen werden, aber in der wiederholenden Verdichtung als genrebildend und identitätsstiftend kenntlich werden (Melodramen in 'Home Stories', 1990, Hitchcock-Filme in 'Phoenix Tapes', mit Christoph Girardet, 1999). Diese Strukturierung schafft Raum zur Intervention, den Müller nutzt durch das Einweben selbst gedrehten und gesammelten, teilweise autobiographischen Bildmaterials: Objektives wird dergestalt mit Subjektivem durchwirkt, daß die Grenzen verschwimmen; es enthält sowohl erinnerte Film- und Fernsehbilder der eigenen Kindheit aus den sechziger Jahren ('Alpsee', 1994).
