It is well known that Nicephore Niepce required an exposure time of eight hours to take his famous photograph, which marked the beginning of the history of photography. In about the same time I can fly comfortably across the Atlantic from New York to Paris today on a standard passenger airplane. I could even make it to Hamburg in this amount of time. And there would still be time remaining for a cup of coffee before takeoff. As part of the "Miles & More" generation, I am constantly amazed at this-at least when I'm in a taxi on my way to the airport. "Why are you doing this?" my friends and clients asked me when I opened the third Bransch office in Paris this spring. (I think they actually wanted to ask me, "Why are you doing this to yourself?") Well, why? I did it, of course, because it was actually feasible. I have always been interested in things like this. But by far the more important reason why is that I believe in the universal language of photography-a language that expresses itself more clearly than many other forms of art. Thus, I always find myself setting off on an adventure when it comes to photography-like a nomad-loaded up with the whole family. After more than 10 years as an agency, we have developed an empire of photographs from a variety of Bransch photographers from various countries, as you will see on the following pages. Or outside your doorstep on a billboard or carefully stored in the arsenal of memories as well as in digital archives. What do I like best about it? It is an absolutely tranquil realm. And Bransch 03 explains the photographs in detail. With that, welcome to the republic of photography! SUSANNE BRANSCH - SEPTEMBER 2004
