About the Author:
Geb. 6. 9. 1814 Meppen; gest. 31. 8. 1883 Bad Pyrmont. Der Sproß eines westfälischen Patriziergeschlechts wuchs im Jagdschloß Clemenswerth (Emsland) auf. Nach einem Jurastudium war der Freund von Annette von Droste-Hülshoff und Karl Gutzkow 1841/42 Bibliothekar auf der Meersburg, 1842/43 Erzieher beim Fürsten Wrede in Ellingen, 1843-45 Redakteur der Augsburger Allgemeinen Zeitung, 1845-52 Feuilletonchef der Kölnischen Zeitung. Als Reisejournalist berichtete er 1846 aus Paris, 1847/48 aus Rom und Neapel. Seit 1852 lebte er als freier Schriftsteller auf seinem Gut in Sassenberg, ab 1857 zeitweise im nahen Münster, nach 1874 in den Wintermonaten in Rom.
