Synopsis
Le 13 octobre 1066, au moment où les armées d'Harold et de Guillaume allaient en venir aux mains dans les plaines d'Hastings, un cavalier normand sortit des rangs, lança son cheval en avant du front de bataille, et, pour préparer ses compagnons à vaincre ou à mourir, entonna la chanson de Roland.
Ce n'est pas là une invention poétique; ce n'est pas seulement Robert Wace qui, dans ses vers, nous montre l'armée normande s'animant aux noms de Charlemagne, et de Roland, et d'Olivier et des vassaux qui moururent à Roncevaux; les historiens les plus dignes de foi, Guillaume de Malmesbury, Mathieu Paris, Ralph Higden, Albéric des Trois-Fontaines, Mathieu de Westminster, parlent tous de ce chant carlovingien inaugurant la bataille et répété en choeur par les soldats du conquérant. Nous savons jusqu'au nom du trouvère intrépide qui paradait en chantant entre les deux armées: il était serviteur du comte de Mortain et se nommait Taillefer...
