This is considered to be a basic beginner's book but in fact it goes far beyond and includes analysis and discussions of historic grandmaster games. Even master level players will gain benefit from studying this book.

Emanuel Lasker was born on December 24, 1868 at Berlinchen in Neumark (now Barlinek in Poland), the son of a Jewish cantor. Emanuel Lasker was world chess champion for 27 years, from 1894 to 1921. He was probably already the strongest player in the world by 1890. In his prime, Lasker was one of the most dominant champions, and he is still generally regarded as one of the strongest players ever. His contemporaries used to say that Lasker used a "psychological" approach to the game, playing weak or inferior moves to confuse opponents. Recent analysis, however, indicates that he was far ahead of his time. It has been shown from modern computer analysis where the ultimate truth has in many cases become known, that the “weak moves” played by Lasker were actually the strongest moves in the positions. In their 1921 match for the world championship, Lasker resigned the match to Capablanca after only 14 games had been played, saying the weather was too hot in Cuba where the match was being held. However, only three years later, Lasker finished ahead of Capablanca in New York 1924. Recent studies have shown that Lasker was still the strongest player in the world in 1926. Capablanca and Lasker both died during World War II and in the same place, Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. Emanuel Lasker died on January 11, 1941. This book contains problems and positions that will baffle the strongest players. It is a mistake to dismiss it as just another beginners book. Although it starts with just the basic rules of chess, it continues with deep analysis. William Henry Watts was born in 1878 in Louth, Lincolnshire, England and died 1941 in Edmonton, England. He was the publisher of chess books.
