“On Tuesday morning, October 16, 1962, shortly after nine o'clock President Kennedy called and asked me to come to the White House. He said that we were facing great trouble. Shortly afterward, in his office, he told me that a U-2 had just finished a photographic mission and that the Intelligence Community had become convinced that Russia was placing missiles and atomic weapons in Cuba. “That was the beginning of the Cuban Missile crisis – a confrontation between the two giant atomic nations, the U. S. and the U. S. S. R. which brought the world to the abyss of nuclear destruction and the end of mankind.” Thus the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy began his account, in this intensely moving and dramatic document of the agonizing events of those thirteen days when America confronted Russian in the Caribbean – the Russians raced to establish an atomic capability that would threaten the entire American continent and America mobilized her military and diplomatic forces in a supreme effort to prevent the establishment of intercontinental missiles in Cuba.

Robert F. Kennedy was born on November 20, 1925. He is often regard as a weak second brother to John F. Kennedy but in reality he was far better educated. He graduated from law school and passed the bar exam. John F. Kennedy did neither. He also wrote five books. There are lingering doubts as to if John F. Kennedy wrote his books, or did ghost writers hired by his father write them, as his farher was grooming him to run for President? Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated on June 6, 1968. A question is why was this book published posthumously on January 21, 1969. Why not publish it when Robert F. Kennedy was still alive. One suspects that the answer might be in classified material.
'Each of these .... pages of soberly reported fact is more thrilling than any fiction. No one can read this – so simple yet so dramatic – without realizing at once again what the world has lost by the death of these two brothers.”
Harold Macmillan
“The world was faced with . ... the greatest danger of a catastrophic war ... The Performance of the U. S. Government during that critical period was more effective than sat any other time during my seven years as Secretary of Defense. The agencies of the Government .... worked together smoothly and harmoniously . That they did so was in large part a result of the efforts of Robert Kennedy.”
Robert S. McNamara
