Almost every website says that Lombardy was Bobby Fischer's second in the 1972 World Championship Match for the World Chess Championship. This was technically not true. In one of the last conversations before he died, Lombardy revealed that Fischer had never hired Lombardy to be his second. There was no written or even verbal agreement between them for Lombardy to be Fischer's second. What really happened is Lombardy just hung around with Fischer and helped him with mostly end game analysis. Lombardy arrived in Reykjavik before Bobby got there. Since Lombardy was always around Fischer, it was just assumed that Lombardy was Fischer's second. However, I was at the match and I was a friend of Fischer and Lombardy and I personally heard Fischer say, “Lombardy is my chess boy.” When I later told this to Lombardy, he replied, “I am not his chess boy any longer. The match is over.”
