Japanese artist Saburo Murakami was a founding member of the avant-garde movement Gutai, active in the 1950s-60s. Gutai artists created works which anticipated later Happenings and performance and conceptual art, as well as installations, and inspired many non-Japanese artists. The group was, for instance, a formative influence on the Fluxus movement.
