Synopsis

The important and difficult problem of the literacy in Ancient Rus' is raised and solved by the author based on limited but very rich epigraphical sources, such as the graffiti on various objects and on building walls, inscriptions on the artifacts of laic and Christian predecessors, monumental inscriptions on mosaics and frescoes, and on stones and crosses. Investigating the origin of a written language in Ancient Rus' the author discredits many forged and falsified monuments, particularly speculations about the so called "Velesova Kniga" ("The Book of Veles"), and analyses some pre-Christian inscriptions that could be interpreted as fragments of Cyrillic texts utilized in the administrative practice of the 10th century. Broader spreading of literacy is testified to by the epigraphical monuments after the Christening of Rus', in the 11th-13th centuries in the privileged social strata and among qualified craftsmen.
