PreSchool-Grade 3 While Gabriel's father sleeps in the back of their van, a large trailer filled with circus animals accidently hooks on to their bumper and takes them on a wild ride. Gabriel takes the wheel, trying to steer the van while various animals from the trailer come in through the roof. When the van breaks loose from the trailer, Gabriel awakens his father just in time for them to make an extraordinary entrance into the circus tent. Large, dark-toned illustrations full of energetic fluid lines capture the swift moving action of this night time ride. The text is well written, but the story has flaws. Placing Gabriel behind the steering wheel in a realistic story is both an inappropriate example for young listeners and somewhat frightening. While the elements of trucks, animals, and a circus have great child appeal, Gabriel's wild adventure that takes place while his father remains sound asleep lacks the reasurance expected from a good nighttime story.
