From Library Journal:
In the summer of 1942 Alice and Jerome, two members of the French Resistance, arrive at the home of Jerome's friend Charles, an apolitical industrialist in Vichy, France. Their goal is to convince Charles to make his factory a haven for political refugees from occupied France. In the process of seducing Charles to the cause, Alice falls in love with him, thus jeopardizing their operation and wounding Jerome, who loves her. This new offering by Sagan, former enfant terrible of the French literati, is more like an intellectual exercise than a novel. The characters strike poses and attitudes, rather than come alive. They state platitudes about love and honor, duty and happiness, but in the end no one really cares. For libraries where the author is popular. Andrea Caron Kempf, Johnson Cty. Community Coll.
