Caitlin and Dylan Thomas were married for 16 years, until Dylan's death in 1953. Though they seemed destined for each other, they were at times each other's nemesis, and Caitlin is not averse to revealing the squalid details of the marital discord, financial distress, infidelity, and alcoholism that turned this love story into a tragedy. But she also records the tenacity and tenderness, the barely defined homeliness and dependence gently simmering, like her perennial pot of soup, above the turbulence. Though the language is not as Dylanesque as in her earlier work, Leftover Life To Kill (1957), what it lacks in compressed metaphors it makes up for in honesty and vivid narrative.
