El libro publicado bajo el título El Kybalión apareció por primera vez en 1908, en los Estados Unidos de América, bajo el seudónimo Tres Iniciados. El Kybalión es un acervo de conceptos filosóficos sobre el universo cuya transmisión hasta antes de su publicación sólo se había hecho de boca a oído al interior de organizaciones secretas. Si bien existe un buen número de versiones en español de El Kybalión, la mayoría parte de traducciones un tanto descuidadas o con pretensiones de corregir el estilo original del autor. En ellas, muchos términos se han usado indiscriminadamente, lo que termina por confundir al lector. En esta traducción se ha cuidado especialmente de respetar el espíritu de la terminología original así como el estilo del autor. Al final se incluye La Tabla de Esmeralda, único texto efectivamente atribuido a Hermes Trismegisto, del que se dice contener toda la verdad en unas cuantas líneas. Los "tres iniciados" que escribieron El Kybalion decidieron permanecer en el anonimato. Esto ha generado muchas especulaciones sobre quién escribió realmente el libro. Hay varias escuelas de pensamiento que se atribuyen su autoría. La teoría más popular es que Paul Foster Case, Michael Whitty y William Walker Atkinson (también conocido como Yogi Ramacharaka, Swami Panchedasi, Magus Incognito, Theodore Sheldon y probablemente muchos otros pseudónimos conocidos y desconocidos) eran los "tres iniciados" que escribieron el libro.
