Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Sinbad the Sailor is a fictional sailor from Basrah, living during the Abbasid Caliphate - the hero of a story-cycle of Middle Eastern origin. During his voyages throughout the seas east of Africa and south of Asia, he has fantastic adventures going to magical places, meeting monsters, and encountering supernatural phenomena. The stories themselves are based partly on real experiences of sailors around the Indian Ocean, partly on ancient poetry (including Homer''s Odyssey and Vishnu Sarma''s Panchatantra), and partly upon Arab, Indian and Persian folklore and literature. Sinbad''s quasi-iconic status in Western culture has led to his name being appropriated for a wide range of uses in both serious and not-so-serious contexts, frequently with only a tenuous connection to the original tales.
