They operate at a lower level than the standard mallocfamily of memory management routines, by changing data segment spaceallocation. The brk and sbrk subroutines dynamically change the amountof space allocated for the data segment of the calling process. (Forinformation about segments, see the exec subroutine. For informationabout the maximum amount of space that can be allocated, see the ulimitand getrlimit subroutines.) The change is made by resetting the breakvalue of the process, which determines the maximum space that can beallocated. The break value is the address of the first location beyondthe current end of the data region. The amount of available spaceincreases as the break value increases. The available space isinitialized to a value of 0 at the time it is used.
