Synopsis
A cárie dentária é um dos principais problemas de saúde pública na Índia. Cerca de 60-70% da população indiana sofre desta doença e cerca de um terço tem acesso a tratamento. O cariograma é um instrumento de diagnóstico que pode prever a ocorrência de cáries dentárias com base na dieta e noutros factores associados à sua causa. Dá-nos uma solução pragmática para a gestão da cárie dentária através da incorporação de escovagem regular, bochechos com flúor e outras medidas de higiene oral na vida quotidiana. A investigação indicou que a cárie dentária é um encargo financeiro para o indivíduo, o que pode funcionar como um obstáculo ao seu tratamento, pelo que medidas económicas como o "Pacote Básico para a Saúde Oral" (BPOC) podem salvar o dia para a comunidade. Assim, é necessário agir proactivamente na utilização do cariograma como uma ferramenta eficaz para o rastreio e a detecção atempada de cáries dentárias e medidas para a sua gestão.
