本书从哲学诠释学和中西史学比较的角度，对中西古典时代著名的传记史学家司马迁与普鲁塔克进行比较认识的可能性和合理性进行了论证。此外，本书又从古今相通、中西互鉴的旨趣揭示了司马迁与普鲁塔克在历史观、人文观和轶事观三个维度的异同，以及对两者在中西传记史学领域取得突出成就的社会历史原因进行分析。本书认为对司马迁与普鲁塔克传记史学观念的比较研究，不但具有历史意义，也具有重要的现实意义。总之，本书的突出特点是在古典时代的中与西、哲学与历史、叙事史与传记史学的相互关联中，探求中西传记史学的特点，并在司马迁和普鲁塔克传记史学的异同中表现出来。
