Synopsis
The Four Books refers to The Analects, Mencius, The Great Learning, and The Doctrine of the Mean. Zhu Xi, a renowned scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty, compiles and annotates these four classics together in one book entitled Collected Interpretations of The Four Books, and thus the name The Four Books comes into being. The Analects is the collection of sayings and ideas of central Chinese thinker and philosopher Confucius, written by his followers. The Great Learning and The Doctrine of the Mean are selected from The Book of Rites. Mencius is the collection of works written by Menci and his disciples. All these four books are of crucial significance to study Chinese ancient philosophy, literature, and history.
