本书是陕西省古籍整理办公室在对陕西全省范围内碑刻普查的基础上，综合选择拓本而形成的成果汇编，是该办历年收藏拓本的合集，也是陕西省“十三五”古籍整理出版规划重大项目的成果。该书收录陕西境内历代碑刻、墓志、摩崖、造像拓本共4000余种、9000余幅（未重复收录《西安碑林全集》中已出版的文献资料），相当数量的拓本资料为初次公布，对历史、文学、艺术研究具有极高的价值。 本书每种拓本均配以简要的说明文字，按原碑时间统一排序；尽可能选用高清拓片，对书法精美或文字较小、模糊的拓本，适当局部放大，以便摹写、辨认。
