以往大多数人权概念依赖形而上学或神学的假设，这实际上破坏了人权。因而，本书设想了另一种选择：人权可以由普通民众创造，在本土发育并被其适用的群体接纳。作者旗帜鲜明地提出应把人权看作社会建构的产物，由此铺筑从乌托邦到人类解放的“人权之道”：其一，通过开掘现实理论资源(包括文化资源和神经生物学资源)，将人权的建构视为一个学习过程；其二，在具有自我批判能力的共同体(也可以是民族国家)之内哺育“坚定而自信”的个体，并创造条件使二者互哺；其三，进行“互惠主义和利他主义”的情感教育，并鼓励采取积极的“剧作者”立场。
