编撰《经典常谈》的提议,源自当时负责统筹中小学国文教科书编写工作的杨振声。杨振声认为,有必要编写一部普及传统经典知识的书,以帮助更多的人了解和传承中华文化。这一提议与朱自清先生的学术理念不谋而合。 《经典常谈》一书用十三个专题介绍了一些主要的古代经典,分别是：《说文解字》、《周易》、《尚书》、《诗经》、"三礼"、"春秋三传"、"四书"、《战国策》、《史记》与《汉书》、诸子、辞赋、诗、文。书中的所谓"经典",是包括群经、先秦诸子、几种史书和集部一些著作在内的广义的国学经典,并不仅限于儒家的"十三经"。
