本書是“本草綱目研究集成”叢書的子書之一。書中正文充分汲取《本草綱目影校對照》的校勘成果，盡力存《本草綱目》原貌之真。注文（隨文見注）則全面追溯《本草綱目》引文來源（注明原書名、卷次、篇目），并摘錄相對應的原文，以存原文之真。“溯源”之舉旨在映襯李時珍“翦繁去複”的深厚功力，彌補《本草綱目》引據欠明的某些不足，從而使本書能輔翼《本草綱目》，方便讀者參閱。從這個意義上來說，本書是當今《本草綱目》家族後續著作中唯一能同時展示引文與原文之真的新作，可供读者直接窺知李時珍所引資料的原貌。 本書適合中醫藥研究與臨床人員、文獻研究者參閱使用。
