《唐诗诠辩》分为上、下两编。上编《唐诗类诠》讨论了从写情、言志、写意、摹景、说理、叙事等方面讨论了唐诗的写作趣向问题；从阅读的必要性、技术手段、艺术效果与时代特征等方面讨论了唐诗用典问题；从通用性、独创性和人格特征等方面讨论了唐诗意象问题；从异文、背景不明、与误解比较、变例等角度讨论唐诗歧解问题。
