The entire book consists of 22 chapters, with odd-numbered chapters tell of the stories of Flora Tristan, Paul Gauguins grandma, while even-numbered chapters narrate stories of Paul Gauguin. The stories of the grandma occurred in 1930s and 1940s; while the stories of the grandsons stories occurred during the period between 1880s and 1903. When Paul Gauguin was born (1848) , Tristan had died for 4 years. She was a social activist, organizer of labor movement and propeller of feminism; while Gauguin is an artist, he cares nothing about politics, seeks for an exotic atmosphere and life in a land of idyllic beauty, and yearns for customs, myths and legends of the primitives. On the surface, the 2 persons live in different times and have different spheres of activities, however, they share a consistent goal, namely, building a paradise on the earth.
