But, destiny does not arrange as Pip hopes. Estella marries another man; the escaped prisoner is arrested with all his money confiscated; the great expections that Pip expects vanish like soup bubbles. The whole story is exciting and touching. Plots describing how hope emerges and vanishes at last arouse the sympathy of readers from generation to generation. Many western critics regard it as Dickens' best novel.
