Synopsis
Wang Xizhi (303 - 361 AD) was a famous Chinese calligrapher in Eastern Jin Dynasty traditionally referred to as the Sage of Calligraphy (Shu Sheng). He was born in Linyi, Shandong, and later moved to present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang and lived a hermit life in present-day Shengzhou, Zhejiang in his old age. He served as a secretary, General of Ningyuan, Governor of Jiangzhou, General of the Right Army, etc. His calligraphy combines the characteristics of official script, cursive script, regular script and semi-cursive script with refined pattern and he widely collected the advantages of other calligraphers to refine his calligraphy with a unique style which got rid of Han-Wei Period calligraphy and had far-reaching influence. His calligraphy is peaceful and natural, indirect and reserved, beautiful and powerful. His masterpiece Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion is regarded as the 'Best Calligraphy Work in Semi-Cursive Script'.
