本书采用假设验证的总体研究思路和方法，对英汉篇章中的回指理解进行了对比研究，全书主体内容共分三大部分。第一部分致力于厘清与篇章回指相关的一些基本概念，阐述研究的理论基础，提出基本理论假设，构建篇章回指理解的语言学理论模型，将其作为篇章回指理解的可验证的具体理论假设。 第二部分是基于语料数据库的假设验证，旨在分析研究英汉叙述体篇章中话题引人的方式与篇章回指之间的关系，零形代词和第三人称代词在篇章中的指称距离，并结合对回指语和先行语的句法位置分析.检验本书提出的篇章回指理解的语言学模型。 第三部分是基于向心理论的计算语言学验证，着重探讨在英汉零形代词和第三人称代词的指代消解中，向心参数的不同设定对消解结果的影响，比较不同设定对消解结果影响的异同，分析其产生的原因，进一步验证篇章回指确认原则的理论预测。
