本书是杜月笙长女杜美如的回忆录，以杜美如回忆其父的历史往事、家庭故事及其本人经历，为线索串联出全书的内容。全书正文内容分为三部分。第一部分“悠悠家国事”中，杜美如回忆了她的家族往事，描述了其父母从相识到结婚的经历，家中兄弟姐妹成长的故事，以及杜家人与当时社会各界名流交往的趣事。杜美如的母亲出身京剧世家，在她的回忆中着重讲述了当时一些京剧演员的轶事，颇有趣味。第二部分“闯荡伴戏韵”讲述杜家离开上海赴香港后的一些生活经历，尤其是其父与当时著名的京剧演员孟小冬的感情生活。第三部分“同是曲中人”，杜美如回忆了自己晚年回到上海的一些经历，从她参观故居的感受出发，以晚年的视角再一次回忆杜氏家族的点滴细节。
