Water Margin written by Shi Naian is one of Chinese four classic novels. The story tells 108 heroes got together in Liangshan in late Beisong Dynasty to fight against corrupt officials, and later were offered amnesty as the emperor troops. The novel shows the evolution and the failure of Chinese peasant uprising, and reveals that class oppression is the root for their failure. It praises the hero leader Song Jiang, and others like Lin Chong, Lu Zhishen, Wu Song and other Liangshan heroic images. The story is known for vivid character depicting, marvelous plotting and superb scene depiction. Water Margin is one of the earliest Chinese novels written with vernacular and have been widely read.
