本书以具有同源关系的八本禅籍为主要研究对象，研究禅门内部隐秘的禅宗语言话语体系。此八本禅籍，从《宝林传》(801)开始，至《祖堂集》(952)、《景德传灯录》(1004)、《天圣广灯录》(1023)、《建中靖国续灯录》(1101)、《联灯会要》(1183)、《嘉泰普灯录》(1204)，最後至《五灯会元》(1253)。本书从延续四百五十多年的八本禅籍中，辨勘正误，掘发禅籍俗语词和禅籍俗语的一般义和禅宗语用场景下的禅籍义，在疏通禅籍文本的前提下，研究禅门师徒授受的套语套路，构建禅宗语言的话语体系。
